Sudden Blurred Vision? Glaucoma? Retina? Diabetes?
Experiencing sudden blurred vision, particularly when it is accompanied by other symptoms could be an indicator of various disorders and diseases.
Among the causes of blurred vision are glaucoma, a detached retina, stroke, diabetes, stress or migraine and this is why experiencing any kind of sudden vision impairment makes a visit to a specialist essential. Most causes of blurred vision can be explained and, where necessary, treated (and some causes can justify emergency treatment).
With glaucoma, you could be in the process of losing eyesight unknowingly it. Dubbed by some people as "The Silent thief", glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss today. Glaucoma symptoms can include sudden blurred vision, severe eye pain, redness of the eye(s) and experiencing a reduction in peripheral vision. In some cases a sufferer can experience symptoms such as nausea and the appearance of a "halo" around light sources.
In the case of open-angle glaucoma the problems take effect gradually and victims may not notice symptoms for some time and until it's too late. Glaucoma is actually a range of eye diseases often characterised by optic nerve damage.
In instances of retinal detachment blurred vision is usually characterised by the appearance of spots, swirls or stringy images in your field of vision. Eyesight may also appear to flicker between lighter and darker vision and objects may appear to have unexplained shadows in some light. A detached retina is a serious disorder and urgent advice and treatment should be requested.
Stroke victims sometimes experience sudden blurring, a peripheral vision problem, double vision or a sudden loss of vision. Strokes are a leading cause of death and paralysis in all developed countries often due to the brain being deprived of a sufficient blood supply.
Severe stress, diabetes, migraines and the need for eyesight correction can also cause sudden blurred vision but this list is far from exhaustive. So if ever you or a member of your family complain about any of the symptoms mentioned in this article it's always sensible to seek professional medical attention and advice.
