Lloyd George was a major British statesman of the twentieth century who, having been born in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manch ster to Welsh parents, is noted for being the only Prime Minister to have used English as his second language with Welsh being his first.

A trained lawyer, Lloyd George enjoyed a long political career during which he is credited for being a moving force behind the creation of the modern welfare state in Britain. Lloyd George was the last ever Liberal to become Prime Minister leading a coalition government which enjoyed more support from Conservatives than it did Liberals.

The eventual split in his coalition government was seen as a major factor behind the decline of the Liberal Party for the remainder of the twentieth century. In 1926, when Lloyd George became leader of the Liberal Party, he failed to return the party to power. In 1929 Lloyd George became the longest serving member of the House of Commons earning him the position of "Father of the House".

Lloyd George is perhaps remembered most for being an energetic Prime Minister between December 1916 and October 1922 who steered Britain and her Empire through World War 1 to secure victory over Germany. Lloyd George was also a key representative at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference which laid out the new world order after World War 1.
