The German Occupation of the Channel Islands During the Second World War - Channel Islander

I think it's worth mentioning that, after WW2, the Post Office issued a special set of stamps in 1948 intended for use mainly in the Channel Islands in order to commemorate their liberation from Nazi occupation.

You can see examples of these liberation stamps and covers at the GBStamp.co.uk Channel Islands Liberation web page by clicking my posting name.

Although I think you are broadly right it is only fair to point out the OS is now releasing some data as you would like to see but still under a fairly tight licence agreement.

Over here in the US we miss Ronald Reagan's leadership. No president since has shown the strength and conviction he did and I sense many people in England feel the same way about Margaret Thatcher.

Antarctica: The Race to the South Pole 1911-1912 - Antarctic Monkey

It's a shame that Britain's history books have been written to lavish praise on Scott and his brave but doomed attempt to reach the South Pole first when mistakes and poor leadership ended up costing exped lives.

Surely the exploits of Sir Ernest Shackleton deserve far more praise in British Antarctic history as, while he too failed to make the pole first, his courage and leadership went beyond the extraordinary to save expedition lives, particularly in his later Trans-Antarctic expedition when his ship Endurance was crushed by pack ice leaving him and his men stuck on the ice!

The German Occupation of the Channel Islands During the Second World War - Jotty

The Channel Islands have issued their own stamps in recent years having been made independent of the British Royal Mail. Prior to that they used GB stamps and had their own regional stamps issued by Royal Mail (as did Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man).

As with most places, there are some stamps and first day covers that become more valuable than others. For Jersey and Guernsey first day covers a lot of people like to collect those produced under the German WW2 occupation and some of these can prove very valuable.

Many other collectors focus on the older victorian and Edwardian postal history of the islands where postmark identification is usually the giveaway about the Channel Islands connection.

The Channel Islands are certainly a popular specialisation among philatelists but it's a little difficult to say which covers are valuable and which are less so.

Thanks for your interest Susan.
